A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines, marking one of the strongest seismic events to hit the country in a half-century. The major tectonic event occurred at 7:37 AM local time with its epicentre situated near Maasim in Sarangani province.

Impact and Casualties
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has verified severe structural and human losses:

  • Casualties: At least 61 people are confirmed dead, over 1,400 individuals are injured, and 40 people remain missing.
  • Displacement: The disaster has impacted over 346,000 residents, displacing more than 45,000 people from their homes.
  • Damaged Infrastructure: Over 12,600 houses have been damaged or completely destroyed. Landslides have cut off 45 road sections and damaged 8 bridges, severely complicating rescue efforts. 
Affected Areas
  • General Santos City: Hit heavily by structural collapses, including commercial establishments, restaurants, and a school building.
  • Sarangani Province: The mountainside town of Glan suffered major casualties due to massive landslides burying residential areas.
  • Davao Occidental & South Cotabato: Reported widespread structural damage, flooding risks, and power outages. [1, 2]
Seabed and Environmental Alterations
Scientists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a massive geographical shift along the Cotabato Trench. The seismic energy pushed portions of the coastline upward by up to 2 metres, exposing extensive stretches of previously submerged coral reefs and seagrass beds. This sudden coastal uplift has resulted in a widespread die-off of local marine life.


Emergency Assistance and Tsunami Warnings
Initial 1-metre tsunami waves reached local coastlines and triggered regional alerts as far away as Indonesia and Japan, but these warnings have since been lifted. Displaced residents remain in temporary government shelters while K9 units and search-and-rescue teams work through landslides and unstable wreckage.
